What if we could take a magic pill to become better teachers? ⁣

Well, we can. It’s all about how we look at our ability to connect with the learners. ⁣

So if confidence was the magic pill…

93% of drivers in the USA believe their skills to be better than average, and 90% of managers rated their performance in the top 10%.⁣

And what about teachers? ⁣

Well it’s hard to say, because most avoid real self-reflection. In fact, as one participant puts it in a recent study by Canning, it gives a “squirmy feeling of vulnerability”. ⁣

But here’s the catch: “When reflection doesn’t work for me, it’s because I’m  avoiding certain questions  . . . because they make me feel vulnerable. I have to take a risk.  It’s an issue of identity. ”⁣

Teaching is, to some extent, a craft. As craftsmen & women, we have very subjective opinions about our work. And as humans, we seek evidence that validates that opinion and filter out the rest.  ⁣

Without recognizing our flaws and using our strengths to our advantage, we cannot make progress. We get stuck. ⁣That magic pill becomes more than just confidence: it’s a discerning eye and ability to face those difficult questions.

Progress comes from  creating change.  You know that you can make change happen, but if you don’t know where you are going, how will you know when you’ve created that change? ⁣⁣
